Freelance-equivalent floor = BLS median hourly wage × 1.43. The multiplier is not a house estimate: it is the exact ratio of total employer compensation cost to wages and salaries for private-industry workers in the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for March 2026 — $46.60 total cost per hour worked ÷ $32.60 wages = 1.43 (the remaining $14.01/hour is benefits: insurance, paid leave, retirement, and employer-side payroll taxes). Charging below this floor means earning less than the fully loaded cost of the equivalent employee, before covering any business overhead or non-billable time.
The floor deliberately excludes business overhead, non-billable hours, and profit margin — real quoted rates typically sit above it. An earlier version of this dataset applied an undisclosed "+15–25% freelance premium" to BLS wages; those numbers could not be reproduced from their cited source and were dropped rather than republished. What remains is one transparent formula over verified government data.

Why are these figures lower than freelance rate-card surveys?
Because they measure different things, and only one of them is verifiable. Marketplace and vendor rate surveys mix self-reported quoted rates (not collected earnings), skew toward whoever answers, and rarely publish a method. This table starts from what employers verifiably pay for the same work — BLS OEWS surveys roughly 1.1 million establishments — and applies one disclosed conversion. Treat the floor column as your walk-away number, not your quote: established freelancers price above it for scarcity, specialization, and proof of results. If a rate survey shows double these figures, that is a claim about the top of the market, not evidence the floor is wrong.

Utilization and scope-creep benchmarks from earlier versions were dropped: their sources are membership-gated or no longer publicly resolvable, so the figures cannot be independently verified.
- Known limits: OEWS covers employees, not the self-employed — freelance figures here are a disclosed derivation, not a survey of freelancers. National estimates hide large metro spreads.
