Chargebee vs Stripe Billing Pricing 2026: Fee Math
Chargebee vs Stripe Billing 2026: Chargebee Flow is 0.80% of invoicing or $99 + 0.65%; Stripe Billing is 0.7% of volume, with a crossover at $198K a month.
Chargebee's Billing plan (Flow) costs $0 a month plus 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume, or $99 a month plus 0.65%[1]. Stripe Billing costs 0.7% of billing volume on pay as you go[2]. Both sit on top of card processing, which on Stripe is 2.9% + 30¢ per US card charge[3].
Stripe Billing is cheaper below about $198,000 of monthly billing; above that, Chargebee's $99 + 0.65% option wins against Stripe's pay-as-you-go rate. Chargebee's old free-to-$250K Starter allowance no longer appears on its pricing page.
Chargebee and Stripe Billing solve the same problem (recurring billing, dunning, subscription state) as a percentage of what you bill. Since Chargebee repriced, the two are close at small scale and cross over at high volume. This article works the math at five monthly billing levels, from $5,000 to $250,000, using the prices on each vendor's pricing page on 2026-10-11. For Chargebee alone, see the Chargebee pricing 2026 breakdown.
1. Two fee models
| Component | Chargebee (Flow) | Stripe Billing |
|---|---|---|
| Option A | $0/mo + 0.80% of invoicing volume[1] | Pay as you go: 0.7% of Billing volume[2] |
| Option B | $99/mo + 0.65% of invoicing volume[1] | Annual volume tiers, 0.67% beyond included volume[2] |
| Included usage | 100M usage events/mo[1] | On- and off-Stripe transactions; excludes one-off invoices[2] |
| Card processing | Separate gateway (e.g. Stripe 2.9% + 30¢)[3] | Stripe 2.9% + 30¢ (US card)[3] |
| Higher tier | Enterprise, by quote[1] | Custom pricing at the top volume tier[2] |
Chargebee's two Flow options are equal at $66,000 of monthly invoicing ($99 divided by the 0.15-point rate gap); below that the $0 option is cheaper, above it the $99 option[1]. Stripe Billing has one pay-as-you-go rate after retiring its older Starter and Scale split, plus annual tiers sold in local currency; from our location they were shown in euros, starting at €500 a month for up to €80,000 of monthly volume[2][4].
2. The math at five billing levels
Billing-software fee only, using the cheaper Chargebee option at each level and Stripe's pay-as-you-go rate:
| Monthly billing | Chargebee Flow (cheaper option) | Stripe Billing (0.7%) | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5,000 | $40 (0.80%) | $35 | Stripe by $5 |
| $40,000 | $320 (0.80%) | $280 | Stripe by $40 |
| $66,000 | $528 (either option) | $462 | Stripe by $66 |
| $120,000 | $879 ($99 + 0.65%) | $840 | Stripe by $39 |
| $250,000 | $1,724 ($99 + 0.65%) | $1,750 | Chargebee by $26 |
The arithmetic at $120,000: Chargebee is $99 + 0.0065 × 120,000 = $879; Stripe is 0.007 × 120,000 = $840. Setting $99 + 0.0065V equal to 0.007V gives V = $198,000, the monthly billing above which Chargebee's $99 option beats Stripe's pay-as-you-go rate. Below that line, Stripe Billing is cheaper at every level, but never by more than about $66 a month.
3. Both stack on card processing
Neither fee is the whole cost. Card payments still route through a processor, and on Stripe that is 2.9% + 30¢ per US card charge[3]. On a $29 subscription charge:
- Stripe Billing: processing 2.9% × $29 + $0.30 = $1.14, plus billing 0.7% × $29 = $0.20, total $1.34 (4.63% effective).
- Chargebee Flow + Stripe processing: processing $1.14, plus Chargebee 0.80% × $29 = $0.23, total $1.37 (4.73% effective).
The processing fee dwarfs the billing-software fee: the 0.7% versus 0.80% gap is three cents on a $29 charge. The decision should rest on features and fit, such as Chargebee's revenue recognition and CPQ add-ons or Stripe's single-vendor setup, more than on the billing-layer rate.
4. What changed in 2026
Chargebee's pricing page no longer shows the Starter plan that was free until $250,000 of cumulative billing and then charged 0.75%, nor the Performance billing plan at $7,188 a year that this comparison quoted in May 2026. The current self-serve Billing plan is Flow, at $0 + 0.80% or $99 + 0.65% of monthly invoicing volume[1]. "Performance" now names a revenue-recognition plan priced on request, and the free "Starter" plan belongs to Chargebee Growth, available only to Chargebee Billing customers[1].
Stripe Billing's pay-as-you-go rate is unchanged at 0.7%[2]. The practical effect: early-stage founders lose the reason they used to start on Chargebee, a free billing layer until $250,000 of lifetime billing.
5. Decision guidance
- Under about $198,000 of monthly billing, already on Stripe: Stripe Billing at 0.7% is cheaper and removes a vendor.
- Above $198,000 a month: price Chargebee Flow's $99 + 0.65% against Stripe's annual tiers at 0.67%.
- Need multiple gateways, revenue recognition or CPQ: Chargebee, which connects to 40+ payment gateways and sells RevRec and CPQ add-ons[1].
- Want tax compliance handled too: neither; look at a merchant of record such as those in Stripe Billing vs Lemon Squeezy or Polar vs Lemon Squeezy.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Chargebee cost in 2026?
Chargebee's self-serve Billing plan, called Flow, has two price options on its pricing page as of 2026-10-11: $0 a month plus 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume, or $99 a month plus 0.65%. The two cost the same at $66,000 of monthly invoicing; above that the $99 option is cheaper. Flow includes 100 million usage events a month. Enterprise is priced by quote. Card processing is paid separately to your payment gateway.
Is Chargebee or Stripe Billing cheaper?
Below about $198,000 of monthly billing, Stripe Billing is cheaper: it charges 0.7% of billing volume, against Chargebee Flow's 0.80% (or $99 plus 0.65%). At $40,000 a month that is $280 on Stripe Billing and $320 on Chargebee. Above roughly $198,000 a month, Chargebee's $99 plus 0.65% option undercuts Stripe's pay-as-you-go 0.7%, though Stripe's annual volume tiers at 0.67% narrow that gap.
Does Stripe Billing include payment processing?
No. The 0.7% Stripe Billing fee is a software fee for subscriptions, invoicing and dunning. It sits on top of Stripe's standard US card processing fee of 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful charge. Chargebee is also billing software only and routes payments through a gateway such as Stripe, so both pay the same underlying processing cost.
Does Chargebee still have a free plan up to $250K?
Not on its current pricing page. Earlier in 2026, Chargebee's Starter plan was free until $250,000 of cumulative billing and then charged 0.75%. The pricing page on 2026-10-11 lists the Flow plan at $0 plus 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume, or $99 plus 0.65%, with no cumulative free allowance. The free Starter plan that remains belongs to Chargebee Growth, its retention and offers product, and is only for Chargebee Billing customers.
